Housewives' Choice

This came today

Not so long ago housewives had a number of very good reasons to be desperate. Not only did they have to look after their families in an age of depression, war and austerity, but they did so without the consumer durables that we now consider essential…

With humour frequently in its sights, Housewives' Choice is a programme of films from the BFI National Archive that explores the lives of British housewives from the 1920s to the 1950s. The programme includes ...

This came today. There's praise for you - let's keep it unpredictable!Hello,

I am Dave Watterson, a former General Secretary of the British Federation of

Film Societies. For many years I have maintained a website, which lists

details of most film societies in the British Isles. (www.filmsocs.org.uk)

This month I am updating the website and wondered if you could give me any

news of the programme for the coming season.
This came today:

Around about now some film societies are hibernating and contemplating the season ahead but when the summer's over and the gear comes out you might find that the screen is looking a little tired. If you find that your society is one of those that find that the screen needs replacing then please feel free to contact me on 01487 815303. I have been supplying projection screens for over 20 years and have been able to help many film societies save a lot of money (typically 30% ...

Latest news April 08

I'm dropping out of WFS to some extent as I've got too much to do. The committee is fairly depleted at the moment and we really need new input in many ways. I'm backing off now so that any re-grouping can take place before the season finishes, and if there is a problem then we can raise it at the AGM and put it to the members.

Maybe someone will want to do a web page but if not then I think this message board could do the business. It'd save loads of work. It's really easy to put stuff ...

wirksworth.net message board

Pity about the wirksworth.net message board - all that wit and wisdom gone down the pan! Where are Lynn C Doyle and her dodgy mates now? Hanging about on street corners up to no good I expect.

It’ll be interesting to see what they come up with to replace it. The old one wasn’t used as much as one would hope - but it was a bit basic.

Maybe a board with more features will attract more attention: groups and divisions representing the varied interests of Wirksworth people, live links, images ...

One result is the declining fortune of the charity shop - many having to go up market. Another is the ...

Next Film Friday 4th April

BEAUTIFUL THING

(1996 - English)

A grim, gritty South London housing estate makes an unlikley setting for an uplifting love story. Adapted by screenwriter Jonathan Harvey from his own stage play, Beautiful Thing tells how teenage loner Jamie falls for next-door neighbour Ste, one of the tough kids who bullies him at school. Amazingly, he finds his feelings reciprocated, and the two progress to a tender, tentative relationship. Despite the problems of working-class homophobia, the film ...

Film selection for next season

It's very watchable just as a film drama - tense, exciting. But also relevant to comtemporary issues: terrorism, 9/11, Iraq etc

google

cheers

Jacob

NB if you are new to this board - blue text usually means click here for a link.
