An American Coup is a brand new film which is released in the UK on DVD?from Monday. The film is provoking lots of debate online and everyone from ...

With humour frequently in its sights, Housewives' Choice is a programme of films from the BFI National Archive that explores the lives of British housewives from the 1920s to the 1950s. The programme includes ...

BEAUTIFUL THING

(1996 - English)

A grim, gritty South London housing estate makes an unlikley setting for an uplifting love story. Adapted by screenwriter Jonathan Harvey from his own stage play, Beautiful Thing tells how teenage loner Jamie falls for next-door neighbour Ste, one of the tough kids who bullies him at school. Amazingly, he finds his feelings reciprocated, and the two progress to a tender, tentative relationship. Despite the problems of working-class homophobia, the film ...

How can we make this Forum a little more interesting? As it is about films why are we not talking about them.

We could do it in several ways...such as sharing favourite lines from films. How about a weekly film quiz? Or we could share our favourite sad/happy/shocked/ moments in films.

All right then, I'll start with my one of my favourite lines... and you tell me where and who said it and in what film. OK?

This is from Kay in Bonsall

Hello film fans.....

Here is something different.....

Saturday 1st December. Springtime in a Small Town. Director Xiao Cheng Zhi

Chun/China/Hong Kong/France/2003. Runtime 117 minutes/PG. Mandarin with

English sub-titles.

This is a sort of oriental Brief Encounter – a beautifully restrained drama

of unspoken desires, pent up frustrations and awkward social etiquette. It

revolves around sickly Dai Liyan, his wife Yuwen, and the ...

The Ritz at Belper is proving to be such a success. One of many items on their programme is a Thursday morning showing. Twice I have been there and enjoyed good coffee (with a free biscuit), an introduction by Ashley Franklin followed by the film. On both occasions, all seats were filled.
Could Wirksworth ever match this, do you think?

Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in Wirksworth!

Friday December 7th bar opens 7.00pm, Wirksworth Town Hall. Film starts 7.30pm

Wirksworth Film Society's Christmas show is TOP HAT- the great dance classic with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. A rare opportunity to see a classic film on a big screen.

The classiest and funniest of the Astaire-Rogers musicals, Top Hat offers something close to perfect cinematic escapism

A high point of the film is the stars' performance of 'Cheek ...

As it happens, I work in an office next door to the British Federation of Film Societies. I went in and said hello to Ros who told me a few interesting things.

(Are we members? It costs £60)

They offer films for hire for £80 to societies, pass on to next society on the list after viewing.

They have 2 DVDs of shorts. Cost £100 for 10 films includes license to show each one twice, then you own the DVD.

Their conference is at The Showroom Cinema in Sheffield £20 for members with ...

Colin suggested that we should start thinking now about the next programme 08-09

I've got The Battle of Algiers on my list. It's very watchable just as a film drama - tense, exciting. But also relevant to comtemporary issues: terrorism, 9/11, Iraq etc
